Anglais in Antibes

In French, « l’imparfait » is used to describe a scene or habits in the past.

• Il faisait beau, les oiseaux chantaient, des gens se promenaient dans le parc. (scene)
• Ma grand-mère faisait des confitures, et on allait pêcher avec mon grand-père. (habits)

To construct the imperfect, add the correct ending to the correct form of the verb…

hihi let me explain:

1) Correct ending

Il/Elle/On	ait	Il/Elle/On chantait
Nous	ions	Nous chantions
Vous	iez	Vous chantiez
Ils/Elles	aient	Ils/Elles chantaient

Listen to how it’s pronounced and repeat:

Notice how all the forms are pronounced the same except nous chantions et vous chantiez.

Listen to another example :

Je vivais, Tu vivais, Il/Elle/On vivait, Nous vivions, Vous viviez, Ils/Elles vivaient.

2) Correct form of the verb

You need to use the verb as conjugated with nous in the present but without ons:

infinitive	conjugated with nous	correct form	« imparfait »
Manger	Nous mangeons	« mange »	Je mangeais, tu mangeais…
Pouvoir	Nous pouvons	« pouv »	Je pouvais, tu pouvais, il pouvait…
Faire	Nous faisons	« fais »	Je faisais, tu faisais, il faisait…
Boire	Nous buvons	« buv »	Je buvais, tu buvais, il buvait…
Voir	Nous voyons	« voy »	Je voyais, tu voyais, il voyait…
Prendre	Nous prenons	« pren »	Je prenais, tu prenais….

3) Funny stuff

• There is one exception : le verbe être. Écoutez, répétez, apprenez:

J’étais, Tu étais, Il/Elle/On était, Nous étions, Vous étiez, Ils/Elles étaient

• Verbs which already had an i now have ii :

Étudier : J’étudiais, Tu étudiais, Il/Elle/On étudiait, Nous étudiions, Vous étudiiez, Ils/Elles étudiaient.

Crier : Je criais, Tu criais, Il/Elle/On criait, Nous criions, Vous criiez, Ils/Elles criaient.
